Why is my needlepoint business called Stitch Sloth? It’s one of the questions I get asked most often. Recently, an anonymous comment questioned the name, and it reminded me that every business name has a story. This is the story behind why my needlepoint business is called Stitch Sloth.
Every business has a story, and every business name has one too.
Recently, an anonymous comment questioned the name Stitch Sloth. The person said they didn’t like my branding, thought the name was stupid, and wished I would change it.
It didn’t upset me. If anything, it reminded me why I chose it in the first place.
How Stitch Sloth Became More Than a Needlepoint Business
When I first began creating Stitch Sloth, I didn’t know exactly where the business would lead. I knew needlepoint would be at the heart of it, but I wasn’t sure whether the platform might eventually expand into cross-stitch, crochet, or other forms of stitching.
I knew I wanted the word “stitch” in the name.
The “sloth” part came from what stitching represents in my own life.
Today, Stitch Sloth has grown into both a digital platform for stitchers and Shop Stitch Sloth, my online needlepoint shop. As Stitch Sloth has grown, more people have asked why my needlepoint business is called Stitch Sloth, and the answer has always been the same.
What Needlepoint Means to Me
I grew up in New York, where life always seemed to move quickly. I’m naturally accustomed to moving at a fast pace, thinking about several things at once, and always looking ahead to what’s next.
Needlepoint changes that for me.
When I stitch, everything slows down. It quiets my mind and allows me to focus on one small area, one thread, and one stitch at a time. Needlepoint is truly my zen. It takes me to a place of calm in a way that very few other things can.
That feeling is what inspired the name Stitch Sloth.
Sloths move slowly and methodically. They aren’t concerned with rushing simply because the rest of the world is moving quickly. To me, that perfectly represents the peaceful, intentional pace of needlepoint.
The name reflects my personal story and the feeling I hope Stitch Sloth gives to other stitchers: a place to slow down, enjoy the process, connect with the needlepoint community, and find a little calm in a very busy world.
Build a Business That Reflects Your Story
People will always have opinions, especially when they can share them anonymously. It’s easy to be bold from behind a screen.
But someone else’s opinion doesn’t get to determine the story behind your business.
Choose the name that means something to you. Build something that reflects your own story—not someone else’s opinion.
That’s exactly what I plan to continue doing with Stitch Sloth.
Whether you’ve been stitching for decades or are just discovering needlepoint, I hope Stitch Sloth reminds you to slow down, enjoy the process, and make time for creativity.
I’d love to hear your story. How did you choose the name of your business?
