The Fabulous Addiction of Buying Needlepoint Canvases

Let’s be honest: needlepointing is only half the hobby. The other half? Buying more canvases than you could ever possibly stitch in a lifetime. It starts innocently enough—you finish your first canvas, proudly show it off, and think, “I should do another one!” And before you know it, you’re swimming in a sea of hand-painted needlepoint canvases, designer needlepoint kits, and exclusive needlepoint designs, stashed in every available drawer, closet, and (if you’re truly dedicated) under your bed.

Why do we do this? Well, for one, every new canvas is a promise of future creativity. That whimsical holiday needlepoint design? That’ll be perfect for next year! That oversized landscape canvas? A long-term project, obviously. The tiny needlepoint ornament you swore you’d knock out in a weekend two years ago? It’s still in the ‘priority’ pile.

Then there’s the undeniable thrill of the hunt. Needlepoint canvases aren’t just fabric and paint—they’re treasures. Finding that one exclusive needlepoint design, you’ve been eyeing for months at a trunk show? Pure magic. Discovering a new needlepoint artist with a style that speaks to your soul? Instant obsession. Convincing yourself that you “need” another floral canvas even though you already own five? A totally reasonable decision.

Of course, there’s also the community aspect. We all know that friend who enables our addiction (and if you don’t, it’s probably you). Texts fly back and forth: “Did you see the new arrivals?” “I just picked this up, isn’t it amazing?” “I shouldn’t have, but…” We cheer each other on, not just in stitching but in collecting. Because let’s be real: a well-stocked needlepoint stash is a source of comfort. Bad day? Browse your canvases. Feeling uninspired? Flip through your collection. Need a mood boost? Order a new designer needlepoint kit.

So here’s to our fabulous addiction. We may never stitch everything we own, but that’s not really the point. The joy is in the collecting, the dreaming, and the sheer excitement of imagining the possibilities. And if anyone questions our ever-growing stash, we’ll simply say, “It’s an investment in my happiness.”

Now excuse me while I go browse for just one more…
